Kat is on the workshop faculty. She will lead two workshops, speak as part of a panel on different publication paths and common misconceptions about the publishing process, provide manuscript evaluations, and host office hours to answer writers’ questions.
July 14, 2026 Poetry Foundation Summer Poetry Teachers Institute Poetry Foundation, Chicago, IL
The 2026 program will be led by acclaimed poets, expert educators, and teaching artists Lauren DeJulio Bell, Lucy Biederman, Kat Higgs-Coulthard, Lupe Mendez, Faisal Mohyuddin, Vera Naputi, Kenyatta Rogers, and Michelle Schaub, with additional session leaders to be announced soon. In addition to daily seminars and workshops at the Bennett Day School, participants will have the option to attend an offsite poetry reading and reception on Thursday evening.
The 2026 Institute will explore the theme “Poetry Speaks” through seminars, hands-on workshops, and small breakout sessions. Designed for educators at all experience levels with teaching poetry, the Institute supports participants in developing classroom-ready poetry lessons and dynamic unit plans. They will learn strategies that increase student curiosity and comfort around poetry. Participation is free to eligible educators.

Kat hosted the 14th annual writing conference for over 100 teens in grades 7-12. In addition to coordinating the event, Kat presented a workshop for teens on mining their own experiences for story ideas.

Mapping Memories: A family Write-In
Join author Katherine Higgs-Coulthard for this fun writing session for the whole family. Families will collaborate to write a story about a specific experience using guided prompts, including making neighborhood maps and labeling the site of important memories.
April 9, 2025 Ferdinand Library Open House & School Author Visit at Ferdinand Jr/Sr. High School, Ferdinand, IN
Kat will be at the Ferdinand Library on Wednesday, April 9th for an Open House between 11 a.m. and noon. Everyone is invited to meet her, talk to her about her journey and purchase/have her book “Junkyard Dogs” personally autographed. She will then proceed to Forest Park Jr/Sr High School to speak with the students and staff.

This monthly online (Zoom) reading series called First Friday Readings features authors with Nebraska connections, national presence, and a newly published book. The hourlong event, moderated by Larksong director Karen Shoemaker, will include both the author’s reading and Q&A with the audience.
